The Chip Bag Project: From Snack Wrapper to Sleeping Bag

Every year, people around the world eat billions of bags of chips, and almost every single one of those shiny, crinkly bags ends up in the trash within minutes of being opened. They cannot be recycled through normal curbside programs, they do not break down in landfills for decades, and most people never think twice about tossing them. One young environmental activist in Detroit looked at that same throwaway trash and saw something completely different: warmth.


Her name is Eradajere Oleita, and the organization she built out of that idea, called the Chip Bag Project, has turned thousands of discarded snack wrappers into sleeping bags for people experiencing homelessness. It is a project that sits right at the intersection of chemistry, sustainability, and community care, and it started with something as simple as a birthday idea.


Where the Idea Came From

Oleita moved to Michigan from Nigeria as a high school sophomore, and by the time she reached her mid-twenties, environmental activism had become a defining part of her life. She studied global studies with a focus in environmental science at Oakland University and worked with local sustainability programs like Detroit's Youth Energy Squad, teaching students about climate change and environmental justice in their own communities.


The specific idea for the Chip Bag Project came together during her 25th birthday. Around that time, in the early days of the COVID lockdown, Oleita came across a video online of a woman in England demonstrating how to iron chip bags together to form a thick, insulated sheet. Instead of scrolling past it, Oleita decided to actually try it herself, using online tutorials to figure out the process. She made a few sleeping bags on her own and gave them out to people living outdoors in her community as a small birthday project. What started as a one time idea quickly grew into something much bigger.


The Science Behind the Shine

To understand why chip bags work so well for this purpose, it helps to know what is actually inside them. Most chip bags are not simply plastic. They are lined with a thin layer of a material called Mylar, the same reflective material used in emergency blankets and helium balloons.


Mylar is prized in situations involving heat and cold because of how it interacts with thermal energy. Rather than absorbing heat and slowly losing it to the surrounding environment, Mylar reflects heat back toward its source. When Mylar lines the inside of a chip bag, it helps keep chips fresh by blocking moisture and light. But when that same reflective layer surrounds a person instead of a snack, it becomes a shockingly effective way to trap body heat, functioning almost like a personal, reflective cocoon.


Oleita has described the finished sleeping bags in a way that makes the science feel obvious once you hear it: think of stepping into one giant, oversized potato chip bag. That is essentially what the final product is designed to be.


From Trash Bin to Sleeping Bag

Making one of these sleeping bags is a surprisingly hands on, low tech process. Empty, foil-lined chip bags are first cleaned out and flattened. Then, using a household iron, volunteers carefully melt and fuse the edges of many individual bags together, layering them until they form one large, continuous, insulated sheet. It takes a lot of raw material to make just one finished product. Early reporting on the project noted it required roughly 150 to 200 individual chip bags to produce a single sleeping bag.


Once assembled, these reflective, wind and water resistant sheets function as lightweight, packable sleeping bags. For someone sleeping outdoors, especially during harsh Midwest winters, that kind of insulation genuinely helps retain body heat in a way that few affordable alternatives can match.


Growing Far Beyond One Person's Idea

What began as a single volunteer effort has expanded dramatically over the past several years. The project, sometimes also called Chippin' In, now organizes teams of volunteers who collect donated chip bags from individuals, schools, and even corporate partners. Distribution has grown alongside collection. The organization now regularly assembles winter kits that pair the insulated sleeping bags with other essentials like gloves, socks, hand and body warmers, and hygiene supplies, which are then distributed directly to unhoused individuals in Detroit through community outreach events sometimes called warming tent drives.


The scale of the operation has grown well beyond what Oleita likely imagined during that first birthday project. Requests and donations have poured in from well beyond Detroit, including from as far away as Singapore, and the organization has reported distributing thousands of winter kits and warming supplies since it began. In 2025, the project received a 167,000 dollar grant from Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to help expand its reach even further.


A Project With Two Missions at Once

What makes the Chip Bag Project especially compelling is that it tackles two very different problems using the exact same solution. On one side, it addresses a genuinely difficult recycling problem. Chip bags are considered nearly impossible to recycle through standard municipal programs because they combine layers of plastic and foil that are extremely difficult to separate and process using conventional recycling equipment. Without projects like this one, essentially all of them are destined for landfills, where they can take decades to break down, if they break down at all.


On the other side, the project directly addresses housing insecurity, one of the most visible and persistent challenges facing cities like Detroit. By transforming a stubborn waste material into functional, insulated shelter gear, the project creates value out of something that would otherwise serve no purpose at all beyond taking up space in a landfill.


Oleita has described this dual purpose as central to her motivation, explaining that the work lets her tackle plastic waste while also creating something genuinely useful for people who need it.


Getting Students and Communities Involved

The hands on nature of the project has also made it a natural fit for classrooms and youth programs. Students with Detroit's Youth Energy Squad, for example, have participated directly in ironing chip bags together to build sleeping bags as part of a science and climate change resilience unit, turning an abstract lesson about plastic waste into a tangible, immediately useful project.


That kind of accessibility is part of what has allowed the Chip Bag Project to grow the way it has. The process requires no specialized equipment beyond a household iron, no advanced chemistry knowledge, and no significant funding to get started at a small scale, which makes it realistic for schools, community groups, and individual volunteers to participate directly rather than just donating money from a distance.


Why This Story Matters

The Chip Bag Project is a compact but powerful example of a bigger idea that shows up throughout environmental science: waste is often just a resource sitting in the wrong place. A material that seems entirely useless, a crumpled foil bag destined for a landfill, turns out to have exactly the physical properties needed to solve a completely different, seemingly unrelated problem.


It also demonstrates how a relatively simple piece of materials science, the reflective behavior of Mylar, can be applied at a genuinely human scale to meet an urgent, immediate need. You do not need a laboratory or an advanced degree to make a meaningful difference. Sometimes you just need a household iron, a few hundred empty chip bags, and the willingness to see potential in something everyone else is throwing away.
