Phosphorus: From Urine to the Periodic Table

Imagine spending weeks collecting buckets of urine, boiling it down into a thick black sludge, letting it sit until it started growing worms, and then cooking that sludge at the highest temperature your furnace could reach, all because you believed it might make you rich beyond imagination. That is not a strange fictional experiment. It is a real event from 1669, and it is how humans first discovered the element phosphorus.
The man behind it was a German merchant named Hennig Brand, and his story is one of the strangest and most important accidents in the history of chemistry.
Who Was Hennig Brand?
Hennig Brand was not a scientist in the way we think of scientists today. There was no such job yet. Instead, he was an alchemist, someone who practiced a mix of early chemistry, philosophy, and mysticism that dominated European thinking about matter for centuries before modern chemistry existed.
Brand had served as a junior officer during the Thirty Years' War, one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. Afterward, he used money from his first wife's substantial dowry to fund his real passion: the pursuit of alchemy. By the time his first wife died, that fortune had reportedly run out. Fortunately for his research, his second wife was also a wealthy widow, and her money helped keep his experiments going.
Like generations of alchemists before him, Brand was chasing one legendary goal: the philosopher's stone.
What Was the Philosopher's Stone, and Why Urine?
The philosopher's stone was not an actual object anyone had ever seen. It was a hypothetical substance that alchemists believed could transmute base metals, ordinary materials like lead, into gold. For centuries, brilliant and not so brilliant minds across Europe and the Middle East poured enormous effort into finding it.
Brand's reasoning for where to look might sound bizarre today, but it made sense within the logic of alchemical thinking at the time. Alchemists often believed in something called correspondence, the idea that objects sharing a visible trait, like color, might share a hidden deeper connection. Urine happens to be a pale golden color. It also comes from the human body, which alchemists considered one of the most refined and perfected things in all of nature. Put those two ideas together, and you get a strange but internally logical conclusion: maybe gold, or the secret to making it, was hiding inside human urine all along.
So Brand set out to test that idea in the most literal way possible.
The Experiment: Weeks of Boiling Urine
Brand began collecting urine in enormous quantities. Some accounts describe him gathering it from local pubs and beer drinkers, while others describe him collecting it from his own household and neighbors. Estimates of how much he ultimately used vary depending on the source, ranging from around 1,200 gallons to as much as 1,500 gallons.
The process itself took real patience. Brand boiled the urine down over roughly two weeks until it reduced into a thick, tar-like black sludge. He then let this residue sit and putrefy, according to some accounts even developing worms as it decomposed, before mixing it with sand and charcoal and heating the combination in a sealed container called a retort.
He kept the mixture at the highest temperature his furnace could produce. After many hours of intense heat, something remarkable happened. A white vapor began to rise and condense into thick, glowing drops. This new substance gleamed in the dark for hours, and Brand had never seen anything like it before.
Cold Fire: What Brand Actually Found
Brand initially called his discovery cold fire, a fitting name for a material that glowed brightly without ever feeling hot to the touch or producing an open flame. Eventually, he settled on a more lasting name: phosphorus, from the Greek meaning light bearer or bringer of light.
What Brand had actually created, without realizing it, was elemental phosphorus, a chemical element that occurs naturally as phosphate compounds dissolved in urine. It turns out urine really does contain meaningful amounts of phosphorus, since the body regularly excretes surplus phosphate that it does not need. Brand had unknowingly succeeded in isolating an entirely new element using one of the strangest raw materials imaginable.
Modern chemists understand why this glow happens, something Brand had no way of knowing. White phosphorus reacts with oxygen in the air in a process called chemiluminescence, releasing energy as a faint greenish light rather than heat. It also has a startling property: white phosphorus can spontaneously ignite at temperatures only slightly above human body temperature, which explains why alchemists of the era treated it with such fascination and caution.
Did He Ever Make Gold?
No. Despite years of continued experiments trying to push his newfound discovery further, Brand never succeeded in transmuting anything into gold. Phosphorus, remarkable as it was, could not fulfill the philosopher's stone's legendary promise.
Ironically, Brand's failure to strike gold in the metaphorical sense did not stop him from trying to profit off his discovery in a very literal one. Running low on money yet again, he eventually sold his secret process to another alchemist, Daniel Kraft of Dresden, on the condition that he not share it with a rival alchemist named Johann Kunckel. Kunckel later figured out how to produce phosphorus from urine on his own anyway and published his findings, helping spread knowledge of the new element further across Europe.
News and rumors of the mysterious glowing substance spread through scientific circles, and other researchers began trying to replicate it. Just over a decade later, in 1680, the English chemist Robert Boyle independently rediscovered phosphorus through his own experiments, unaware that Brand had already found it first.
Why This Discovery Still Matters
Hennig Brand holds a genuinely important title in the history of science: he is considered the first person in recorded history to discover a chemical element and be personally credited for it by name. Every element identified before phosphorus, like gold, iron, or sulfur, had been known since ancient times without a clear individual discoverer attached to it.
Phosphorus itself turned out to be far more significant to the world than gold ever could have been. Today we know phosphorus is essential to life itself. It is a key building block of DNA, the molecule that carries genetic information in every living organism. It is central to ATP, the molecule cells use to store and transfer energy. It also plays a critical structural role in bones and cell membranes throughout the body.
Beyond biology, phosphorus went on to become historically significant in medicine, where early chemists experimented with using it to treat ailments ranging from gout to tuberculosis, and later in industry, where it became a key ingredient in products ranging from matches to fertilizers.
The Bigger Lesson
Hennig Brand's story is a reminder that some of history's most important discoveries have come from people chasing the wrong goal entirely. He never found the philosopher's stone, and he never turned lead into gold. But by relentlessly following a flawed theory to its logical, if bizarre, conclusion, he stumbled onto something that would turn out to matter far more than gold ever did: a fundamental building block of life on Earth.
Science does not always move forward through perfectly planned experiments. Sometimes it moves forward through stubborn persistence, a strange hypothesis, and more than a thousand gallons of urine.
