A 10-week space science experience for middle school students.
Space is more than something to look at. It's something to investigate.
Cosmic Cartographers invites students ages 11–14 to step into the role of explorer, scientist, and mission specialist as they journey through the solar system and beyond.
Over ten weeks at the Indio Library, students will investigate the science behind the worlds, forces, and phenomena that make our universe so extraordinary.
Through hands-on challenges, digital exploration, scientific investigation, and collaborative problem-solving, they'll learn to think beyond the textbook—and start thinking like scientists.
THIS ISN'T YOUR TYPICAL ASTRONOMY CLASS.
Students won't spend ten weeks memorizing planets.
Instead, they'll explore, investigate, analyze, navigate, build, collaborate, and solve problems as they progress through an unfolding space mission.
Each session introduces a new challenge while building on what came before. Along the way, students strengthen the skills that matter far beyond astronomy: critical thinking, spatial reasoning, digital literacy, communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.
By the final session, students will put their knowledge and skills to work in a culminating mission and showcase.

THE JOURNEY
From the familiar night sky to some of the most extreme environments in the universe, students will encounter a wide range of astronomical concepts and scientific challenges.
They'll investigate worlds unlike our own, explore the objects that travel through our solar system, examine the forces that shape planets and their environments, and venture into some of the most fascinating questions in modern astronomy.
The specifics of the mission? That's part of the fun.
We'll save some surprises for the students.

Cosmic Cartographers is designed for middle school students who are curious, enjoy figuring things out, and are ready to take on something a little different.
Whether they're already obsessed with space or simply the kid who is always asking "But why?"—there's a place for them on this mission.
